Côr Dyfed Choir is now well into its 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Our year began on November 12th 2016 with a joyous concert in St Peter’s Church Goodwick, where our founder conductor John S Davies joined our very own Oliver to conduct some of our best loved music. This concert also featured our two Anniversary year commissioned works: a haunting work The Enchanted Island for choir and string quartet by Samuel Howley, and a heartbreakingly nostalgic setting of Waldo Williams’ Cof io for choir and harp by Andrew Cusworth. This was the year that we produced our first ever Dyfed Choir calendar for 2017. Featuring our most colourful past concert posters, with each month sponsored by a chorister, this proved to be an excellent fundraiser. Shortly after the calendar, and in time for our inaugural concert, we launched our first book! This glossy, full colour collection of anecdotes, highlights, memories, photographs and lots more, captured, for many of us, the essence of Côr Dyfed Choir. On December 10th we returned to our favourite venue, St Davids Cathedral, to join the British Sinfonietta for a performance of the ever popular Messiah by Handel. 2017 got off to a flying start with an amazingly successful fundraising mediaeval banquet featuring  the early music group “La Volta” and a meal at tables complete with stuffed swan and boar’s head !  Our next concert will be on April 8th at St Katharine’s Church, Milford Haven when we will be performing the well known Fauré Requiem and some beautiful, if less familiar, works by Poulenc and Finzi. On June 17th we hope to be joined by past and present choristers, family, friends and patrons for another evening of fun, this time at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel in Narberth. The menu is still to be decided but the food is always first class and there will be entertainment for all. Dyfed Choir’s Anniversary year ends on July 15th when we return to St Davids Cathedral for a performance of Verdi Requiem with the British Sinfonietta. We will be joined by singers from the St Davids Festival Chorus and this event will bring our year to an exciting and, almost certainly, unforgettable climax.
